POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. - The Regatta? Already?
Absolutely, say members of the Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta Committee, who have been working furiously for the past several months to plan for this year's three-day event.
According to Jacob Hill, chairman, the annual Regatta is one to which local residents eagerly look forward because of its long-standing tradition as one of the city's largest festivals. Currently in its 16th year, he said the Regatta provides a friendly atmosphere, one which he hopes many people will take advantage of.
“We just want the community to come out and be involved like they used to be,” Hill said. “We're concentrating more on kids' events, and we're an alcohol-free environment, so it's perfect for families.”
So Hill, who is in his first year as chairman, and the 11 other members decided to get an early start on this year's event. Even though the Regatta is more than five months away - this year's event is slated for July 5-7 - Hill said the committee members did not want to waste any time.
“In the past, the Regatta was planned in two months, which didn't always leave ample time for fund-raising and organizing,” Hill said. “By starting earlier, we've given ourselves plenty of time to explore all our options as far as quality entertainment and fun.”
Plans for this year's Regatta began last July, and the committee has met every month except December to plan for this year's event. Although a complete schedule is far from being finalized, Hill said several activities already have been planned, including a full schedule of entertainment in the form of children's games, concerts and new events designed for the old and young alike.
Hill said the headliner for this year's event is Rick K. and the All Nighters, a popular variety-show band that has performed numerous times at the Mason County Fair. The event also will feature new events such as a Battle of the Bands contest and a River Princess pageant, and will see the return of the Colgate Country Showdown, queen pageant and a pretty baby contest.
Hill added that the Kids' Day events were such a success last year that organizers are planning an even bigger range of events for children to enjoy this year, including a magician and Cartoon Idol, a spin-off of American Idol but with cartoon characters such as Spongebob Squarepants, Dora the Explorer and Scooby Doo. Creation Station, which included a variety of crafts, will be back, as will the bounce houses and other kid-friendly games.
