RIO GRANDE — Two new members have been welcomed to the University of Rio Grande Board of Trustees.

The board held a special ceremony Oct. 21 to install Jackson resident Kay Vollborn Ervin and Worthington resident Larry Guglielmi as new members.

Ervin is a retired educational administrator who currently works as an independent contractor for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

A 1971 graduate of Rio Grande, Ervin has had a distinguished career in education, including serving as the school principal at the Scioto County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

Ervin has also served on the Rio Grande Alumni Board, and worked with the board of trustees in the past as the alumni representative to the board of trustees. She served as the alumni representative for two terms.

Trustees are asked to provide governance to ensure that the university meets its full responsibility in providing educational programs, activities and services that are directed to the best interests of its intended beneficiaries.

Guglielmi graduated from Rio Grande in 1973 and is currently the owner/operator of the Guglielmi Co. in Worthington. Guglielmi also served on the Rio Grande Alumni Board and was the group’s president during the 2005-06 school year.

Guglielmi has recently been elected to serve as the alumni representative to the board of trustees, and by virtue of that position is now a trustee. He is also a member of the Archon Alumni Association and enjoys history and hunting.

“I’m excited to have two new trustees who are both alumni of Rio Grande and who both understand the quality education that we provide to students,” said Dr. Greg Sojka, interim president of the University of Rio Grande.

Sojka explained that Ervin and Guglielmi each bring excellent qualities to the board of trustees.

“Kay joins our board after a distinguished career as a public educator. She can bring specific insights to our board from her professional career perspectives,” Sojka said. “Larry also, as one of our alumni, has a significant connection to many of our graduates by virtue of his work with the Archon Alumni Association.”

Sojka also pointed out how Ervin and Guglielmi have been valuable members of the Rio Grande Alumni Board, and how Guglielmi is also serving in leadership positions in several areas with the Lighting The Way capital campaign.

In addition to being installed as trustees, Ervin and Guglielmi were both also granted the honorary degrees of master of public service, which is granted to all members of the board of trustees.
