OHIO VALLEY — Prom is a special night in May each year when area high school students get an opportunity to dress up and enjoy an evening designed just for them.

Before they enter the school gymnasium, most pose for photos and enthusiastic parents who sometime look like the paparazzi.

The word “prom” is short for “promenade,” defined as the formal, introductory parading of guests at a party. What began in the 19th century as simple co-ed banquets held at American universities for their graduating class has become a rite of passage for many high school juniors and seniors.

Proms for Southern, Eastern and Meigs Local high school students were held in their respective gymnasiums, each having been transformed into themed ballrooms. Parents, staff, administers and community volunteers created such magical spaces it was easy for reality to be suspended; most would agree it was difficult to imagine this was their high school gym.

Everyone who had a part in the proms said they did it for the “kids” and hoped prom-goers would take away happy memories of a special evening.
