BELPRE, Ohio — The Lady Tornadoes sure know how to celebrate Homecoming Week.

One night before the annual Homecoming festivities in Racine, the Southern volleyball team claimed a straight-games victory over Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Belpre, in Washington County.

The Lady Tornadoes — who have now won four straight matches and eight consecutive games — won the opening game by a 25-21 count after 11 ties, the last of which came at 21.

Southern trailed by as much as four, early in the second game, but a 12-0 run gave the guests a sizable advantage. The Purple and Gold claimed the second game by a 25-16 count to move ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Lady Tornadoes led wire-to-wire in the third game, capping off the 3-0 sweep with a 25-14 win.

SHS senior Marlee Maynard led the Purple and Gold with 16 kills, including three aces. Talon Drummer posted nine service points, Kamryn Smith and Sierra Cleland each added seven points, while Amanda Cole finished with four points. Rounding out the Southern service attack was Haley Musser and Macie Michael, with two points and one point respectively.

At the net, Cleland led the Lady Tornadoes with 10 kills and six blocks, followed by Cole with eight kills and two blocks. Smith finished with seven kills and one block in the win, while Faith Teaford added two kills and two blocks. Drummer, Michael and Marissa Johnson each had one kill in the win, while Maynard posted one block.

This is the third time this season Southern has swept Belpre, winning 3-0 on September 8, and 2-0 on September 10, both in Racine.

The Lady Tornadoes return to action on Monday, when South Gallia visits Racine.
