Tornadoes topple Belpre, remain unbeaten

Staff Report

BELPRE, Ohio —So far, the Southern Tornadoes are still the perfect storm.

That’s because the Tornadoes, in remaining undefeated on the season at 5-0, scored the game’s first 34 points — and fended off the Belpre Golden Eagles on Friday night inside Ralph Holder Stadium in Belpre.

Southern scored 13 points in the opening quarter and 21 more in the second, as the Golden Eagles didn’t get on the scoreboard until the three-minute mark of the opening half.

After a scoreless third frame, the Golden Eagles amassed two touchdowns — both coming courtesy of big plays.

With the win, Southern is also 3-0 in the Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division — part of its second 5-0 start since 2013.

Belpre fell to 2-3 — and 2-2 in the TVC-Hocking.

All three of the Tornadoes’ pass plays resulted in long-distance touchdowns, including a 55-yarder and a 33-yarder in the first quarter from quarterback Blake Johnson to Crenson Rogers.

The 55-yard connection came with 10 minutes remaining in the canto, and the 33-yarder occurred at the seven-minute mark.

Andrew Evans’ extra-point kick made it 13-0 following the second score.

With three-and-a-half minutes left in the second stanza, Rogers recorded his hat trick of catches — and touchdowns.

Dylan Smith, after his 1-yard TD run at the 7:10 mark made it 27-0 on Evans’ third PAT, hooked up with Rogers to make it 33-0.

Evans, who made four consecutive extra-point kicks, made his fourth and final try for the 34th and final Tornado tally.

Smith rushed for 72 yards on 15 carries, as Ike Akers — whose 3-yard scoring plunge only a minute and 52 seconds into the second quarter made it 20-0 — added 73 yards on a dozen totes.

Colten Holbrook had 118 yards on only 13 tries to lead the Tornadoes.

Southern smashed the Golden Eagles for 53 carries and 316 rushing yards, while amassing a 19-3 advantage in first downs.

Belpre’s balance of 97 rushing yards and 96 passing yards yielded 193 total yards, but Belpre quarterbacks combined to go 4-of-12.

Isaac Tullius completed 3-of-7 passes for 32 yards, but caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Deijon Bedgood with 10:51 remaining.

Tojzae Reams rushed for 92 yards on only six carries, as his 96-yard run with only 1:22 to play capped the scoring.

The Tornadoes return home, and return to TVC-Hocking Division action, next Friday night against winless Federal Hocking.
