JACKSON, Ohio — It wasn’t exactly easy, but 13 golf teams beat the threat of rain — and somehow beat the high heat — as part of Friday’s second annual Vinton County Viking Tee-off Invitational.

In the end, the Gallia Academy Blue Devils finished as the annual event’s runner-up, shooting a team total of 328 at the famous Franklin Valley Golf Club near Jackson.

Gallia Academy, along with Point Pleasant and Southern, represented the Ohio Valley Publishing area golf programs on Friday.

Point Pleasant was the only West Virginia high school squad, as Gallia Academy captured the team championship at last season’s initial invite.

In fact, Point Pleasant placed fifth with a team total of 376, as two Scioto Valley Conference squads — champion Piketon (313) and third-place Zane Trace (359) — sandwiched between the Blue Devils.

Maysville, with only five players competing, finished fourth with a 368.

Gallia Academy also amassed the medalist runner-up, as Taae Hamid fired a smooth four-over-par 75 on the rolling hills layout.

Hamid, the number-one position player for the Blue Devils, finished one shot behind Piketon three-man D.J. Graham for the medalist award.

Hamid shot a 37 on the front nine followed by a 38 on the back, while Graham garnered a 38 before firing a 36.

The Redstreaks recorded three scores in the 70s and one in the 80s, as Graham’s 74 was joined by a counting 76, 77 and finally an 84.

Besides Hamid’s 75, Kaden Thomas and Miles Cornwell each carded a pair of 83s, while Josh Davis shot an 87 for the final of four counting scores.

Each team — minus Maysville — featured six players, with the top four scores counting towards the team total.

Jeremy Brumfield shot an 89, while Reece Thomas shot a 112 to round out the Blue and White.

Point Pleasant’s top four scores included an 89 from Bryce Tayengco — along with a 93 from Doug Workman, a 96 from Colby Martin, and a 98 from Matt Martin.

Colton Fridley posted a 105, while Logan Hill had a 132 to round out the Big Blacks’ cards.

Westfall was sixth with a 387, host Vinton County finished seventh with a 393, Circleville ended eighth with a 394, and Southern notched ninth with a 395.

Southern’s top two tallies were a 92 from Jarrett Hupp and a 93 from Jensen Anderson, as Jonah Hoback had a 103 and Eli Hunter a 107.

Tanner Thorla and Ryan Acree amounted a 108 and 110 respectively.

Rounding out the final four teams — all over 417 — were Huntington (418), Alexander (426), Chillicothe (453) and Wellston (478).
