WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings no-hit the visiting South Gallia Rebels on Saturday, winning 10-0 in a Division IV sectional semifinal baseball game.
The loss ended South Gallia’s season at 1-19 — with its only victory coming against Federal Hocking 10 days ago.
South Gallia had endured back-to-back winless seasons before this year.
The Rebels were the 11th-seeded squad in the Division IV sectional, while Symmes Valley — now at 7-11 — was the sixth seed.
The Vikings vanquished the Rebels by scoring single runs in the first, second and fifth innings — sandwiched around four runs in the third frame and three in the fourth.
The contest was called following the fifth inning with the 10-run mercy rule.
Symmes Valley outhit the Rebels 8-0, as South Gallia was guilty of four errors compared to none for the Vikings.
Chayden Renfroe and Laykin Gothard combined to no-hit the Rebels.
Renfroe pitched the opening three innings and walked one while striking out three.
Gothard worked the final two cantos and walked two with four strikeouts.
Kyler Mills was the complete game pitcher for the Rebels.
Gothard led the Vikings at the plate by going 3-for-4, while Payton Hayes and Shawn Belville belted two hits apiece.
Cameron Meadows singled in the fifth frame, as Derek Brace reached on an error — and ended the game by scoring on a passed ball.
Symmes Valley scored all the runs it needed in the opening inning — when Gothard singled, moved to second on an error, stole third and scored on a Jase Patterson sacrifice fly.
The Vikings upped the lead to 2-0 in the second stanza — when Renfroe reached on an error, took second on a fielder’s choice, went to third on a passed ball and scored on another fielder’s choice.
