Fighting Tigers roll Raiders

CHESHIRE, Ohio — Without question, this is not the roll the Raiders want to be on.

The River Valley High School baseball team dropped its fourth consecutive contest on Saturday, as the Raiders managed only three hits in a 14-3 non-league loss against visiting Ironton.

After opening the season at 3-0, the Raiders have lost four in a row —with Gallia Academy (March 29), Rock Hill (March 31) and Athens (April 1) all coming before.

Only at Athens on Friday, a 17-6 defeat, was a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division game for River Valley.

The other three are all against Ohio Valley Conference competition.

Ironton improved to a perfect 4-0, outhitting the Raiders 15-3, as pitcher Larry Morris tossed a complete game with a personal-best 13 strikeouts.

The contest was called following the sixth inning with the 10-run mercy rule.

The 15 hits for the Fighting Tigers marked a season-high, as they scored four times in the first inning for all the runs they would need.

Ironton added single points in the second and fifth frames, as it scored three times in the fourth before a five-run outburst in the sixth.

The Raiders’ smallest deficits were 4-1 after the first and 5-2 after the third.

Morris allowed only two earned runs, as he walked one and plunked a Raider in addition to three basehits.

Three Raiders pitched as Justin Sizemore started, before being relieved by Austin Ragan in the second and Brycen Brumfield in the fifth.

River Valley scored its first run when Sizemore singled, moved up on a groundout, and scored on a pair of Morris wild pitches.

Trailing 5-1 after two-and-a-half, the Raiders crossed in the third — following Morris’ lone walk, his lone hit batsman and Jamie Bainter’s RBI-single.

Facing its largest deficit at 14-2, the Silver and Black scored its final run in the sixth when Sizemore singled, went to third on Ironton’s only error, and scored on Bainter’s sacrifice bunt.

River Valley returns home, and hosts Alexander in the TVC-Ohio, on Wednesday.
