Lynchburg-Clay falls to VASJ in D-3 semis, 81-64


COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gene Higgins scored 16 points to lead Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph to an 81-64 win over Lynchburg-Clay in a Division III state semifinal game Thursday.

The defending champion Vikings (23-5) used a pair of 8-0 runs in the second half to take control of the game and open a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

Sherman Dean III and Kevin Roberts each had 14 points for VASJ, while Danny McGarry and Alonzo Gaffney each added 11.

Devin Pierson led the Mustangs (25-3) with 28 points.

The Vikings will play Lima Central Catholic at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday in the school’s 12th state championship game.

They won the title in 2015 and 2013 after winning four championships in the 1990s.

Walton leads Lima CC to 3rd straight final

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dantez Walton scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Lima Central Catholic topped St. Bernard Roger Bacon 74-56 in a Division III state semifinal Thursday at Value City Arena.

The Thunderbirds (27-1) outscored the Spartans 18-8 in the third quarter to expand a three-point halftime lead to 13.

That’s as close as it got the rest of the way.

Tre Cobbs added 20 points for LCC, and Ethan O’Connor had 12.

Justin Jonson scored 16 and James Johnson added 14 for the Spartans (21-8).

Lima Central Catholic advanced to its third consecutive state title game against Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

They play at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Vikings won 63-50 last season, after LCC took the 2014 matchup 64-62.

LCC also won a state title in 2010.

New Concord John Glenn surges into D-2 title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — New Concord John Glenn rode a second-quarter blitz to an 84-56 victory over Bay Village Bay in a Division II state semifinal game Thursday night.

Matt Weir scored 26 points while Drew Rackley had 22, Tanner Slack added 14 and Austin Blatt had 11 for the Little Muskies (27-1), who showed why they were ranked No. 1 in the final regular season Associated Press Division II poll.

After falling behind 20-18 in the second quarter, the John Glenn blasted off with a 28-6 run to take a commanding 46-26 lead.

The Little Muskies advanced to their first state championship game, where they will face six-time state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary on Saturday.

John Koz led Bay (24-4) with 21 points while Scott Durham added 14.

Akron SVSM routs Cincinnati Aiken in D-2 semis

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Henry Baddley scored 27 points as Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary cruised into the Division II state championship game with an 85-68 win over Cincinnati Aiken in a state semifinal Thursday.

Jayvon Graves added 23 points for the Fighting Irish (26-3), who made nine of their first 10 shots while building a 23-8 lead early in the first quarter. The lead never dipped below 10 points after the early blitz.

SVSM led 44-26 at the half and 63-40 after three quarters.

Carlik Jones scored 29 points for the Falcons (24-4) while Lonnie Berry added 20.

SVSM advanced to its ninth state championship game.

The Fighting Irish will go for their seventh state title at 5:15 p.m. Saturday against New Concord New John Glenn.

Cornerstone Christian tops Wellington in D-4 semis

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Michael Bothwell had 30 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon McQueen scored 20 points as Willoughby Cornerstone Christian defeated Columbus Wellington 73-67 in a Division IV state semifinal on Friday at Value City Arena.

The Patriots (16-12), in their first state tournament, play Van Wert Lincolnview for the championship on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Bothwell’s layup with 2:12 left in the game tied the score at 66. McQueen scored off a turnover and added a free throw with 1:02 remaining to put the Patriots up 69-66.

Wellington (24-4) missed its final six field goal attempts and scored one point in the final 2:56 after leading 66-62.

Dustin Harder had 21 points and Cameron Edmondson 16 for Wellington, who trailed 40-33 at halftime.

Lincolnview pulls away for 52-39 win over Jackson Center

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Chandler Adams had 14 points to lead Van Wert Lincolnview to a 52-39 win against Jackson Center in a Division IV state semifinal Friday at Value City Arena.

Lincolnview (27-1) will play Willoughby Cornerstone Christian on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. as it seeks its second title. Lincolnview’s first came in 1997.

Trevor Neate had 12 points, Austin Leeth had 10 and Derek Youtsey had nine for the Lancers.

The team outscored Jackson Center 20-9 in the fourth quarter.

Brady Wildermuth had 20 points for Jackson Center (24-5).

Neate hit a 17-footer at the buzzer to give Lincolnview a 32-30 lead after three quarters.

Youtsey followed with a 3-pointer about 15 seconds into the fourth.

Adams had two field goals and Hayden Ludwig had a basket for a 41-30 advantage.

Lima Senior holds off late Wilmington charge for 61-58 win

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Xavier Simpson scored 23 points and Lima Senior had to withstand a late rally to beat Wilmington 61-58 in a boys Division I state semifinal Friday.

The Spartans (29-0) will play the Westerville South-Garfield Heights winner Saturday night for their first title.

Wilmington (27-2) trailed by 20 early in the third quarter but pulled to within the final margin with 8.8 seconds left on three foul shots from Jarron Cumberland. Cumberland had 25 points, including 12 of 17 from the foul line.

Simpson, the 2016 Associated Press Mr. Basketball and a Michigan commit, missed two free throws with 6.3 seconds left.

Cumberland, runner-up in the Mr. Basketball voting, got the rebound but missed a 3-pointer from 24 feet at the buzzer.

Westerville South tops Garfield Heights, 87-78

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Westerville South Wildcats have beaten Garfield Heights 87-78 in a boys Division I Ohio state semifinal at Value City Arena to return to the title game.

Jordan Humphrey led four Westerville South players in double figures Friday with 25 points.

Westerville South is 25-4. It plays Lima Senior on Saturday.

Andre Wesson had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats. His brother, Kaleb Wesson, scored 14 and had 13 rebounds. Ennis Thomas added 13 points.

Westerville South led 47-38 at the half and 64-50 through three quarters in a rematch of the 2015 semifinal won by the Wildcats 60-57. Westerville South lost the championship game to Huber Heights Wayne.

Braun Hartfield had 27 points and 16 rebounds for Garfield Heights, which is 23-5. The Bulldogs made 13-of-34 3-pointers.
