Wildcats sweep Point Pleasant, 65-55

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — It all came down to the fourth quarter.

The Point Pleasant boys basketball team led by one point with eight minutes remaining in Saturday night’s non-conference showdown with visiting Nitro, but the Wildcats outscored the hosts by 11 in the final period to take the 65-55 victory.

Nitro led 18-to-13 at the conclusion of the opening quarter, but the Big Blacks (2-15) cut the deficit to two points, 32-30, by halftime.

Point Pleasant outscored its guest 16-to-13 in the third quarter, giving the hosts a 46-45 advantage with eight minutes to play. The Big Blacks managed just one field goal in the fourth quarter, as Nitro capped off the 10-point victory with a 20-to-9 run.

The Big Blacks were led by senior Bradley Gibbs and junior Parker Rairden with 15 points apiece, while Douglas Workman added 10. PPHS freshman Cason Payne posted nine points, while Trey Tucker rounded out the home scoring with six points.

PPHS shot 21-of-27 from the free throw line in the setback, equaling 77.8 percent.

Seth Brooks led Nitro with 17 points, followed by Joel Sweat with 15. Austin Woodrum and Ryan Eary both scored nine points, Michael Martin added eight, while Joey Buckalew chipped in with four. Nolan Woodrum and Landon Roque rounded out the Wildcat scoring with two points and one point respectively.

Nitro shot 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the win, equaling 78.6 percent.

NHS also defeated Point Pleasant on January 5, by a 82-59 count in Nitro.

The Big Blacks — who have lost 11 straight — will try to get back on track on Tuesday, when Shady Spring visits Mason County.
