SHADY SPRING, W.Va. — A 20-10 third quarter run ultimately provided enough breathing room for host Shady Spring Wednesday night during a 59-39 victory over the Point Pleasant boys basketball team in a non-conference matchup in Raleigh County.

The visiting Big Blacks (2-13) battled through an up and down first half, as the Tigers (7-7) stormed out to an early 17-9 advantage after eight minutes of play. PPHS, however, answered as Bradley Gibbs poured in five points during a 9-7 second quarter run, allowing the Red, Black and White to close to within 24-18 at the break.

Keith Sexton scored nine points as part of Shady Spring’s big third quarter charge, which allowed the hosts to secure a 44-28 edge headed into the finale. Point Pleasant hit three trifectas down the stretch, but never came closer than four possessions as SSHS ended regulation with a 15-11 run to wrap up the 20-point outcome.

The Big Blacks — who have now dropped nine straight decisions — netted half of their 14 field goals from behind the arc and also went 4-of-13 at the free throw line for 31 percent. Gibbs led the guests with 14 points, followed by Cason Payne with 10 markers.

Parker Rairden was next with six points and Douglas Workman added five markers, while Brandon Henderson and Trace Derenberger rounded out the PPHS tally with two markers each.

The Tigers connected on five of 21 field goals from three-point range and also went 12-of-19 at the charity stripe for 63 percent. Cole Honaker paced SSHS with a game-high 21 points, followed by Sexton with 12 points and Peyton Michaels with nine markers.

Michael Guilliam and Michael Holt were next with six points apiece, while Logan Cook and Ryan Riffle respectively rounded out the winning tally with three and two markers. Shady Spring has now won three of its last four contests.

Point Pleasant returns to action this weekend as the Big Blacks host Hurricane on Friday night, then welcome Nitro to town on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
