ALBANY, Ohio — Sometimes you’re just outmatched.
The eighth-seeded River Valley volleyball team saw its 2015 campaign come to a close Saturday afternoon, falling to top-seeded Alexander in straight games in the Division III Sectional Final, at ‘The Nest’.
River Valley (5-18) trailed by just one point at 8-9 in the opening game, following four ties and three lead changes. However, Alexander (13-10) claimed 11 of the next 12 points and cruised to a 25-16 victory.
The Lady Raiders fell behind early in the second game, but battled back to tie the score at eight. RVHS was outscored 17-to-5 over the remainder of the second, as Alexander took the game by a 25-13 count, moving ahead 2-0 in the match.
The third game featured five ties, the latest of which came a 10-10. After that point, the Lady Spartans never surrendered the lead, taking the third by a 25-16 count and the match in straight games.
RVHS senior Courtney Smith led the Silver and Black with six service points, followed by Angel Toler and Alex Truance with five each. Jayanna Armstrong posted two points, while Jessi Steele and Ashley Gilmore each finished with one marker. Jacey Walter led the Lady Raiders at the net with 11 kills, followed by Truance with five.
The Lady Spartans also defeated River Valley on September 17, by a 3-0 count in Albany, and on October 13, by a 3-1 final in Bidwell.
Alexander will now face Piketon in the district semifinal, on Thursday at Waverly High School.
This marks the final game in the careers of RVHS seniors Jacey Walter, Alex Truance, Ashley Gilmore, Courtney Smith, Peyton Browning and Jayanna Armstrong.
