SOUTH POINT, Ohio — It’s not always pretty, but a win is a win and the Blue Angels remain perfect.

The Gallia Academy volleyball team topped Ohio Valley Conference host South Point 3-1 Monday night, improving to 17-0 on the season.

The Blue Angels (17-0, 12-0 OVC) never trailed in the opening game, storming to a 25-18 victory on the strength of nine service points by freshman Ashton Webb. However, South Point evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-14 victory in the second game.

Despite trailing early in the third game, the Lady Pointers established a 12-9 lead. However, eight consecutive service points by GAHS junior Carly Shirver sparked the Blue and White to a 25-19 victory, which gave the guests a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Gallia Academy again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth game, only to have the Lady Pointers rally back and take an advantage at 10-7. The SPHS lead was short-lived however, as the Blue Angels regained the advantage at 11-10. GAHS led by as many as eight points in the fourth game and the Blue and White held on for a 25-21 win and a 3-1 match triumph.

Webb led all servers with 18 points and seven aces, followed by Shriver with 17 points and five aces. GAHS sophomore Grace Martin marked six points and two aces, junior Jenna Meadows added four points and an ace, while junior Abby Wood finished with two points and one ace. The Blue Angels’ service attack was rounded out by Jordan Walker and Brooke Pasquale, each of whom scored one point.

Martin, who finished with nine assists, led GAHS at the net with 20 kills and nine blocks, followed by Webb with eight kills. Meadows posted five kills in the win, Ryleigh Caldwell added three, Walker chipped in with two, while Shriver finished with one kill and a team-best 17 assists. The Blue and White defensive effort was led by Pasquale with 25 digs, followed by Meadows with 23 and Wood with 15.

After hosting Meigs on Tuesday, the Blue Angels will travel to Logan for a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tilt on Thursday. GAHS will have a chance to clinch the SEOAL championship outright with a victory. The Blue Angels next OVC match will be at Portsmouth on Monday, and a GAHS win will secure the conference championship.
