GA, Sheets headed to districts

FRIENDSHIP, Ohio — And here they go again.

The Gallia Academy golf team and River Valley senior Logan Sheets are both headed back to districts after advancing out of the Division II sectional tournament held Tuesday at Shawnee State Park in Scioto County.

The Blue Devils will be making the program’s eighth consecutive district appearance as a team after finishing second out of 14 schools with a score of 330. GAHS was also the 2014 sectional runner-up with a tally of 330.

Piketon repeated as the D-2 champion with a winning total of 319 over 18 holes, while Portsmouth (340), Portsmouth West (345) and Waverly (346) secured the remaining district spots by finishing in the top five.

Sheets — who earned the fourth of five individual district bids — finished tied for 12th overall with a 12-over par round of 84. Sheets will be making his third individual appearance at the district tournament, having also qualified both last fall and as a freshman in 2012.

RVHS finished the day ninth overall with a team score of 408, with Fairland (361), Ironton (372) and Wheelersburg (381) finishing ahead of the Raiders. Rock Hill (425), Northwest (426), Wellston (432), South Point (459) and Minford (461) wrapped up the 10 through 14 spots.

Senior Dares Hamid led Gallia Academy with a sixth-place effort of 78, followed by Zach Graham with an 81 and Marcus Moore with an 85. Taae Hamid rounded out the team tally with an 86, while Miles Cornwell also contributed a 90 for the Blue Devils.

Dwayne Chapman followed Sheets for RVHS with a 103 and Marina Canzinares added a score of 108. Grant Gilmore completed the Raider tally with a 113, while Chance Gillman contributed a 116.

Junior Jordan Tieman of Portsmouth West dominated the 68-player field by earning medalist honors with a 6-under par round of 66. D.J. Graham of Piketon was the individual runner-up with an even par round of 72.

Mitchell McFarland (73) of Wheelersburg, Cory Rawlins (86) of Ironton, and the Fairland duo of Hayden James (78) and Reece Bellville (82) joined Sheets in earning at-large district berths.

Gallia Academy had four of the top-16 individual scores posted and all five Blue Devils finished in the top-25 overall.

The D-2 district tournament will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Crown Hill Golf Club in Williamsport. The district event will begin at 9 a.m.
