ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — There was a sign of growth in the face of defeat.

The Meigs varsity volleyball team took it to conference rival Alexander late, but the Lady Spartans still claimed victory in consecutive games on Thursday in Meigs County. The Lady Marauders (0-6) struggled early on against Alexander, but they fought until the very end.

The Lady Spartans were in control for a majority of the first game — including a nine-point lead during the set — but the Maroon and Gold didn’t stop fighting. Consecutive points helped the Lady Marauders get back within four of the visitors, but the Lady Spartans finished the game with a 25-19 win.

Meigs came out swinging in the second game by taking a 4-0 lead and leading by as much as five points. Alexander came roaring back and tying the game at 13-all. The Lady Spartans continued to ride the momentum to a 25-18 win for Game 2.

The Lady Marauders faced a five-point deficit early on in Game 3 and nearly erased it before Alexander reclaimed control. Meigs faced a 19-13 disadvantage before attempting a comeback off consecutive points from Hanstine. The comeback was not to be as the Lady Spartans ended the match with a 25-17 win.

Kassidy Betzing led the Lady Marauders with nine service points, followed by Alliyah Pullins with eight points and Hanstine with six points. Devin Humphreys earned five points, while Devyn Oliver contributed four points. Morgan Lodwick’s two points and Jordan Roush’s single point aided in Meigs’ efforts.

The Lady Marauders’ next match will take place at home against Federal Hocking on Wednesday. Match time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
