RIPLEY, W. Va. — With six boys and four girls, the Point Pleasant High School cross country clubs competed on Saturday as part of the annual Ripley Covered Bridge Invitational.

There were a dozen schools represented by at least one male runner at Ripley, as nine squads — including Point Pleasant — posted team scores.

The races were held at Ripley’s Cedar Lakes.

The Black Knights’ team score was a 195, finishing only ahead of Scott, which had 253.

However, PPHS was only five points shy of overtaking Nitro, which was seventh at 190.

The Lady Knights, with only four runners, were unable to record a team score — needing one more runner in order to do so.

For the boys, Winfield won the team championship with a team total of 39, as runner-up Ravenswood finished with 66.

Roane County (83) clipped host Ripley (86) for third, while Clay County (120) was fifth and Capital was sixth (153).

Buffalo only fielded four runners, while Sissonville and Bible Center School sported one runner apiece.

The Black Knights, as usual, were paced by sophomore Luke Wilson — who placed sixth out of 71 total runners in 18 minutes and 14 seconds.

The remaining five runners all finished from 44th thru 69th, with only Byron Fisher’s time of 33:16 not counting towards the team total.

Fisher was the only senior boy for Point Pleasant.

The other four counting times were those of sophomore Tanner Durst (44th in 22:41), freshman Isaac Daniels (52nd in 23:59), junior Wyatt Dean (58th in 24:59) and freshman Ethan Scott (63rd in 26:15).

Aaron Withrow, a sophomore from Winfield, was the individual race winner in 17:02.

There were 44 runners in the girls high school race, but only two schools — Winfield with 22 points and Ripley with 33 — had complete teams.

The Lady Knights were one of three squads with four runners apiece — with Buffalo and Clay County being the other two.

Sissonville and Scott had three runners each, while Roane County, Nitro and Capital all sported a pair.

Ravenswood was represented by freshman Paige Pursley.

The Lady Knights’ four runners were sophomore Allison Henderson (14th in 23:39), senior Karson Bonecutter (25th in 26:50), sophomore Cierra Beatty (34th in 28:24) and freshman Tayllor King (35th in 28:31).

Winfield finished first and second in the girls individual race, including the race winner Savannah Hoff in 20:59.
