Reader thinks it’s time for new treasurer Dear Editor,
After the recent public notice that our county treasurer’s property is being sold by the banks, I feel that more needs to be said. Our county treasurer has failed us in many aspects from his job performance to his own personal financial business which has affected this county. [I found] out first-hand of his financial situation when someone showed up at my door to change the locks.
To my understanding, Steve sent out a compan...
Reader shares loss in hopes of helping others Dear Editor,
Each year, over 700,000 women experience pregnancy loss; 26,000 of them lose their babies after the sixth month of pregnancy, and 20,000 babies die, every year, in their first month of life. My baby was one of those numbers.
My son Matthew Liam Rupe was born premature at just 22 weeks on March 19, 2004. He passed away on my chest on March 21, 2004. He weighed 15.6 ounces and was 10 inches long. My beautiful tiny son. Our fami...
Reader warns of Obama’s tax hikes Hello fellow citizens,
If you need a good reason not to return a liberal/socialist president and his Senate to power, here is a dandy. More of your hard earned money will go to the socialist government, which will inefficiently administer programs that have extravagantly paid managers to decide what crumb of return you will get. Under Obamacare, that will include which type of medical treatment the Board decides is best for you.
Sunday wi...
Reader outlines Obama’s accomplishments Dear Readers,
I would like to list a few accomplishments by President Obama. The President has worked tirelessly to end the war in Iraq, expand health care to all Americans and implemented an economic recovery program that has created nearly three million jobs. He has accomplished so much and still has a great deal left to do. Everything he fought for is now at stake.
The question is simple. Will we go forward and build on these accomplis...
Reader: Vandalism won’t change my vote Dear Editor,
I would like to thank whoever decided that it was a fabulous idea to drive through my front yard mowing over every political sign I had. You have reminded me why I am so determined to be true to myself and my beliefs. This just brings to light how ignorant people can be.
On Saturday evening the 22nd, my husband and I discovered that our political signs had been damaged only feet from our front porch. Examining the signs we in...
Reader criticizes county commission’s priorities Dear Editor,
It seems to me, the Gallia County Commissioners would be far better off seeking money to build a police and sheriff’s department to better protect the people already living in Gallia County rather than trying to gain more not to serve and allow crime to mount at an alarming rate because of lack of personnel and equipment.
It appears the gain of a few surmounts the welfare and safety of many.
Tom Woodward,
Gallia County, O...
Reader: Voter ID laws target Democrats Dear Editor,
Since President Obama was elected, nearly a dozen state passed laws requiring governmental identification cards to vote. These various states include Indiana, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.
Altogether, we read, these states control almost half the electoral votes needed for victory in November. It’s estimated that perhaps one in ten adult citizens in these particular states lack the necessary photo IDs.
The segments of ...
Pharmacy student seeks support for diabetes association Dear community, businesses and friends,
My name is Lauren Durst. I am a 23-year-old citizen of Mason, W.Va. and a graduate student at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy. I am also a Type 1 Diabetic. Three days after my eighth birthday my world was changed forever. I was diagnosed with a chronic disease that is still a challenge to manage after 15 years. Science and technology has greatly improved my quality of life, and I now r...
Reader: Christians should not support same-sex marriage I am writing in reference the article in the September 12 issue of Gallipolis Daily Tribune: “Why Does Marriage Matter So Much?” by Mary Jo Kilroy. She wrote correctly on the beauty of the wedding ceremony and on marriage itself. However she seemed to have succumbed to pressure of the homosexual community.
I want to state up front that I do not agree with the practice of homosexuality. I also want it known from the outset that on a personal...
Perennial Cat Shelter reorganizes, seeks support Dear Editor,
Several months ago, I had the good fortune to be introduced to a Gallia County charitable organization known as The Perennial Cat, Inc.
I often speak to members of the community about this organization, and I’ve learned two things. The community deeply appreciates this group, but seldom hears about our activities.
As a volunteer, board member and officer, I would like to share the most current information. Our past presiden...
Reader: Land owners beware Dear Editor,
Recently, my property has been vandalized with raw sewage. Someone drove onto my private property in the open fields and dumped massive amounts of sewage material. I am writing this letter to warn all other land owners to be extra observant and aware of the sick individual who is doing this. This is the second time my property has been trespassed on and vandalized. I do have a partial license plate and a description of the vehi...
Reader questions law enforcement qualifications Dear Editor,
I would like to know how a person could have 30 years law enforcement experience and never have been to the police academy? How is that person going to know what the laws are, how to investigate a crime and supervise other officers? I think the position of sheriff, who will be responsible for our entire county, should at least have been to the academy and have had real officer training. Just ask yourself this question, if you a...
Reader: Stop and think before using hurtful language Dear Editor,
I often wonder if people realize the impact of using the word ‘retarded’. Do they realize how they could be hurting the person standing beside them when they use this word? I would think that in this day and time, with the way that people are about speaking politically correct, that this would be one word that is no longer used.
The definition of retarded is slow not “stupid”. There were/are many great people in history who w...
GIB judges extend compliments to Gallipolis Dear Editor,
Judging for the 2012 America in Bloom Awards Program is happening right now all across the United States. The results of this year’s program will be announced on Saturday, September 22 at the America in Bloom Symposium and Awards in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
What is apparent to us, your judges, is that Gallipolis is already blooming … Blooming with volunteers and community pride, with good government, with beautiful landscapes ...
