Reader is concerned about Medicare Dear Editor,
As the son of elderly parents, I am concerned about the future of Medicare, and I am disturbed about claims made by the Bill Johnson campaign. The truth is that he supports vouchers, and, Charlie Wilson does not. The facts are that Congressman Johnson voted twice for the Ryan Budget bill that would turn Medicare into a voucher system. Check the record. Facts are facts. Don’t be fooled by slick ads paid for by out-of-state intere...
Gallia treasurer outlines delinquent tax payment plans Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to inform landowners of their options for paying delinquent taxes. Landowners may have been misinformed regarding their options. This explanation will clarify any misleading information regarding how payments can be made.
Option 1: A five-pay plan which takes 2.5 years to become current, one-fifth of delinquent taxes plus current one-half year taxes.
Option 2: A 10-pay plan which takes five years to...
Resident unhappy with Charlie Wilson’ record Dear Editor,
There he goes again, Charlie Wilson is telling tall tales and outright lies. The Ohio Election Commission already said with probable cause that Wilson has lied about Bill Johnson’s record. Wilson even admitted to a newspaper that his ads were untrue!
In recent letters to the editor, Wilson and his supporters continue to lie about Bill Johnson’s record. Wilson’s claim that Johnson only recently moved here, well, that’s a slap ...
An open letter to Mitt Romney Hello Mitt:
We are informed conservatives who have the courage to accept the truth. The truth is that Ohio Governor John Kasich has proven himself to be an embarrassment to the Republican party, the Tea Party, Conservatives and Ohioans.
Please keep this and the following in mind the next time you consider having Kasich join you in your campaigning throughout Ohio:
For keeping quiet about a child molester, the NCAA fined Penn State $60 m...
Reader endorses Obama for four more years Dear Editor,
What a dilemma! Do we vote for the party that created the disaster or vote for the party that failed to clean up the whole disaster in only four years? Or, put another way — do we vote for the party that outsourced to Afghan warlords the capture of Bin-Ladin, or vote for the party that actually killed Bin-Ladin using Navy Seals? Or — do we vote for the party that pulled troops from Afghanistan (the country that killed Americans...
Gallia County Treasurer: A sister’s request Dear Editor,
The general election is soon approaching, and many of us will be headed to the polls to place our votes. These votes will be on the national, state and local levels. It is my prayer that all vote, which makes our country, state and county better for all. It is also my wish that the voters not rely on so much slander and libel. This year it seems to be worse than most.
Maybe it is because I am so close to the election on the l...
Voters should keep energy freedom in mind Dear Editor,
Ohio citizens should vote to use our nation’s energy resources.
The vast majority of Ohio electricity is generated by coal. EPA regulations passed by appointed officials takes our voice out of this decision. This will cause increased costs for everyone from auto manufacturers to household dinner table budgets.
The Obama Administration has also complicated the permitting process so as to reduce drilling permits issued by 50 ...
Reader endorses Lynch for Clerk of Courts Dear Editor,
Visiting the Clerk of Courts office or the Title office usually isn’t listed among anyone’s favorite activities; however, if you have visited either of these offices in Meigs County over the past four years, you can appreciate the positive changes that Diane Lynch, current Clerk of Courts, has brought about.
Lynch, her employees, and probationers cleaned, painted, and reorganized the offices on evenings and weekends at no cos...
Grandmother pleased with Halloween activities Dear Editor,
I would like to express my thanks to the churches, businesses, organizations and individuals in the community who contributed to the recent children’s Halloween activities. As a grandparent who is always looking for affordable things to do with my grandchild, I found the activities in the park and at the local churches to be most refreshing and loads of fun for my granddaughter. Having worked in volunteer programs myself, I und...
Can’t we make better use of farmland? Dear Editor,
Is Meigs County growing or are we just standing by as many Americans see our food supply being cut short from a dry season. As for Meigs County I hate to drive to the west end of the county and see farm land in the Salem Center, Dexter, Harrisonville and Rutland areas with so much tillable farm land that could be growing corn or soybeans.
One wonders when someone will come here and lease this land and farm it for growing corn...
Community can support foster youth To Our Community Members,
Do you like to help out people in need? Would you like to help out foster children this Christmas? This year we are asking members of our community for their help in providing gifts for our foster youth.
Transitions for Youth strives to make our foster children have the most normal childhood as possible and providing gifts at Christmas is one way we do that. We are now in the midst of our 2012 Holiday Fundraising...
Women of Appalachia — Speak out Dear Editor,
Perhaps the date was a coincidence, but there we were: four women writers from Athens and Hocking counties, in various states of relatively well-concealed nervousness, reading our work in the open space outside Baker Center’s Multicultural Gallery.
Inside the gallery, the artwork of a diverse group of Appalachian women artists glowed. As we read, escalators hummed, and people gliding up or down peered and maybe caught a line ...
Reader asks, ‘Are we being bamboozled?’ Dear Editor,
Is the American public being “bamboozled?” I believe we are. While there is much debate about Obamacare and what may be hidden in it, in my opinion this is just a smokescreen to pull our attention away from the more important issue.
You don’t need to take my word for it. Check it out for yourself, I’ll tell you how. Go online and pull up Obama’s birth certificate. Examine the long form (finally) released by the White House. N...
Reader: Johnson doesn’t support unions Dear Editor,
Bill Johnson would like for you to believe he supports the men and women of our Labor community, but this is not the case. In fact, Bill Johnson has supported every bill and amendment offered to restrict unions and labor organizations. He voted to restrict the National Labor Relations Board, end collective bargaining, and mandate a 60-day waiting period before union elections. Many of these policies are the driving force that a...
Reader encourages ‘yes’ vote on Issue 2 Dear Editor,
What is Issue 2? I would wager that most voters in this state have no clue how the legislative boundaries are drawn. Everyone assumes that the legislative districts are “fair”. They are not. They don’t know that every ten years, after the census, the political party in power controls the “apportionment board” which gets to draw the lines. The “apportionment board” consists of the Governor, the Secretary of State, the State Audi...
