Reader speaks out about sewer issues
Dear Editor, I would like to speak out again for the people who pay taxes inside the village of Pomeroy that live on Liberty Lane and don’t have city water or sewer service, nor do they have a paved street. As the taxpayers on Rutland Street they haven’t had their street paved since the forties and they don’t have sewer service. On Wednesday June 13 The Daily Sentinel front page story said Pomeroy discusses potential sewer system for ou...

Commissioner reflects on flight experience
Dear Editor, I recently had the privilege of flying our next generation fighter jet, the F-35 Lightning II. OK … well not quite “fly”, but I was able to hop in a mock cockpit and take the plane for a spin via a simulator. It was a great experience that took place at Constellium, a large aluminum plant just down the road in Ravenswood, WV. That company is a big supplier to Lockheed Martin, the defense firm that is developing the impressive...

Reader: Expanding Medicare is good for Ohio
Dear Editor, The Ohio legislature is deciding whether or not to expand the state’s Medicaid program to cover more people. Now, Ohio Medicaid covers individuals according to whether they fall within a certain category, including certain income categories. Complex rules define what categories of people get different types of coverage. Expanding Medicaid to cover all low income individuals under 138 percent of federal poverty would eliminate t...

Special Needs Parenting: I did NOT sign-up for this!
Life has not been easy for my Asperger/ADHD/Bipolar/Asthma/PANDAS Syndrome son lately. Therefore, life has been miserable for the rest of us, too. I made the mistake of overestimating how much change he could take and still be himself. Connor had outpatient surgery about 10 days ago. It was a nervous, nauseous, uncomfortable experience as I sat in the special surgery waiting room with my estranged husband — one I hope to never repeat again. C...

Criminal, clueless or both?
Dear Editor, Is the 4th Amendment dead? With each passing day we see government agencies encroaching on more and more of our Natural Rights, as guaranteed in the United States Constitution. Not only that, but we see more and more so called “Conservative Republicans” in the political class supporting violating the Constitution. The recent National Security Agency’s violation of the 4th Amendment by tracking Verizon Wireless Customers a...

A bad month for privacy rights
Justice Louis Brandeis once called the right to privacy “the right most valued by civilized men.” Sadly, it has become increasingly clear that, despite pronunciations about “change” and “transparency,” the Obama administration is continuing down the path so dangerously started by former President George W. Bush. First, the Supreme Court decided that it is not a violation of the Fourth Amendment if police collect DNA from people who have mer...

Reader: We should be concerned about bee population
Dear Editor, Bees are an important part of the food chain, and therefore their diminishment should properly concern us. The recent dwindling of bee populations is sometimes ascribed to “colony collapse disorder,” in which worker bees abruptly depart from the hive and never return. It’s surmised that certain pesticides called “neonic” prompt this bizarre behavior. And these pesticides are applied to much of American farmland. (Source: www....

Dentist disappointed with broken BWC
Dear Editor, The BWC was created to help injured workers to recover and find new jobs or return to old jobs with adaptations as needed. Everyone knows that any recipient of BWC services has to hire a lawyer to get help with such things as tooth repair, medical needs and most of all rehabilitation services to get back to work. We were in a position to help a man with broken out teeth but even though he had a lawyer, BWC would not pay for thi...

Support you local golf course
Dear Editor, The Meigs County Public Golf Course has operated under new management for several months. During this time, John and Kristin McGee, along with their employees, have worked hard to improve the course. The greens are in excellent condition, and new equipment has been purchased to better maintain the fairways and tee boxes. The irrigation system has been repaired and used extensively. The public is fortunate to have this impro...

Special Needs Parenting: I did NOT sign-up for this!
This is an open letter to lawmakers, parents, educators and the general public. My bipolar/add/LHON/anxiety eight-year-old daughter was pushed into a mental nightmare that no child should ever endure. I almost lost the life of my only daughter. Statistically, it’s easy and brief to explain what mandatory state testing of third through eighth graders every fall and spring has been proven to predict or prove. Nothing. I was unable to find a s...

Daughter of fallen deputy offers appreciation for service
Dear Editor, There are not enough words to express my deep appreciation to Sheriff Greg Powers, Chief Deputy Dave Downing, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association and all the countless volunteers who made Peace Officer’s Memorial Day such a huge success. After 37 years, my dad, Deputy Kenny Love, Sheriff Pete Wedge and Jailer Ernie Hesson got honored the way they should have been. If you missed the service, I can tell you it was extraordinary and ...

Reader thinks history buff went a bit too far
Dear Editor, I, too, saw the story, “Traveling to the Prom” about the high school girl doing her best to portray herself in Civil War dress for the prom. I thought her way of entering the prom was very imaginative and unique, and I for one do not care if the dress was correct for the period. I am sure she did the best she could with what she had. As a matter of fact, years from now I am not going to remember how many hoops were under the ...

Reader: Empathy more important than historic accuracy
Dear Editor, In a Sunday, May 19, letter to the editor Keith Ashley set Civil War costume details straight. However, there is a time for teaching and a time for celebration. Perhaps Mr. Ashley was technically correct in his diatribe, where he virtually tore a young lady’s prom costume to shreds. I do not know the young lady who experienced this devastating criticism, but I do know prom is a time for cheer and celebration and definitely no...

Family very pleased with Holzer Senior Care
Dear Editor, In the Gallia/Mason County area lies a diamond. Recently our mother was a patient at Holzer Senior Care. Their mission is to be “highly skilled in the art of caring”. The compassionate and loving care to our mother was second to none. As we took our final walk with Mom, we were fortunate to be in the company of staff who, indeed, demonstrated their high level of skill in caring. This staff, including Dr. Marla Haller, Pat Fis...
