POINT PLEASANT — The history of Native Americans in Point Pleasant is forever tired to its Revolutionary War past but this weekend, the culture of those first residents along the riverbanks will be solely celebrated.
The City of Point Pleasant, along with the Shawnee Nation will be hosting a Traditional Shawnee Gathering at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 27 at Krodel Park. This will be the first event of its kind held at Krodel and the first in years to showcase the culture of the Shawnee and other Native American people.
One of the focuses of the gathering will be traditional Native American music, particularly drumming, featuring All Nations on drums, Bud Eaglewolf on flute with John Spotted Horse Helton as emcee and Russell Strong Bow Cooper as the arena director.
In addition, Dan Cutler, will make appearances at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. as Chief Cornstalk. Cutler often appears at Fort Randolph and Battle Days, dressing and speaking as Chief Cornstalk.
Lyn Cornwell-Robinson of the Shawnee Nation said the purpose of the event, besides making people aware of it, is to promote the history, culture and a better understanding of Native Americans in the area. Cornwell-Robinson said there are so many of the Shawnee bloodline who live in the area but aren’t even aware of it.
In addition to music and presentations by Cutler, there will be crafts for the kids, including jewelery making. There will be dancing and storytelling as well. Native American vendors will also be set up at Krodel.
In addition, tram rides will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Krodel to the Riverfront Park downtown to tour the murals on the flood wall.
So far, vendors scheduled to appear are: Karen’s Lunch and Munch, Wayward Donut Company, Majikal Hippy Creations, Cherokee Creations, U-Neek Rabbit Shawls, Wolf Mountain Trading Company, The Masters Hand, Ogala Lakota Sioux Outreach.
This event is free of charge. No alcohol permitted.
