Among the many “hands on” activities held during this year’s Ohio Valley Expo was a brief “hands-only CPR” class taught by the instructors of the adult respiratory therapy program at the Buckeye Hills Career Center. Students were taught to push hard and fast on the center of the chest to the beat of the classic tune “Stayin’ Alive.” Hands-only CPR can be just as effective as conventional CPR, according to the American Heart Association.

The adult nursing students at the Buckeye Hills Career Center were happy to provide blood pressure checks and body fat analyses to anyone who stopped by the “green building” on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The one-year nursing program allows students to take the National Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses. The group of nurses who greeted visitors this weekend will graduate from the program this September.
RIO GRANDE — This year’s Ohio Valley Expo featured a broad range of exhibits, vendors and entertainment for the large crowd who made their way to the Buckeye Hills Career Center in Rio Grande this past weekend.
In addition to the business/industry exhibits, vendor displays, the craft show, green house sales, games for children and health care checks that have become a staple of the annual expo, Saturday’s events were highlighted by a motorcycle show, while Sunday featured a classic car show.
Also new this year was the “Running through the Hills at Buckeye Hills” 5K walk/run and 10K run held on Sunday.
Several local entertainers also drew large crowds to this year’s expo.
George McCoy, Danny Bonecutter, Vernon Hendricks and Rachel Jackson-Hendricks, a local group known as Appalachian Divide, performed at noon Saturday, and were followed by local favorite Paul “Bub” Williams.
Open Rail, an impressive bluegrass band based in Gallipolis, were last to take the stage on Saturday.
Sunday’s list of entertainers included Jeff Seitz and Jon Hensler, both local gospel singers, and Lonesome Midnight Cowboys, who play a number of styles of American music.
Shari Lambert, the 2012 Buckeye Idol, performed at 4 p.m. on Sunday, to close out the 2013 Ohio Valley Expo.
