MASON COUNTY — A former educational instructor at the Lakin Correctional Facility for Women has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to the felony offense of sexual imposition on an incarcerated person.

Standley Greene, 44, Charleston, was sentenced to not less than one year and no more than five years with the West Virginia Division of Corrections by Judge David W. Nibert. Upon his release, Greene will have to register with the West Virginia State Police as a registered sex offender for 15 years. After two years of supervision on the registry, Greene can appeal to be released from this term of his sentence.

Greene appeared before Judge Nibert on Thursday for his sentencing in Mason County Circuit Court with his family seated behind him for support. The former Director of Education at the Lakin Correctional Facility for Women was indicted last January for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with a female inmate, specifically between the hours of 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m., Aug. 22, 2008, at the facility where he was an educator.

Before being sentenced, Greene made a statement to the court, expressing his remorse and saying, “not a day goes by that I don’t think about this.” He also told Judge Nibert that, “something like this will never happen again.”

Greene’s attorney, William Forbes of Charleston, also addressed the court, acknowledging Greene was in a position of trust and that trust was violated by his actions. Forbes then asked Judge Nibert to consider Greene’s work record which he said was “exemplary” up until this point and that his client had been in a long term relationship most of his life. He also asked the judge to look at the psychological evaluation submitted to the court which described Greene as being at “low risk” to re-offend.

Judge Nibert then said he’d spent a great deal of thought on the case. He acknowledged the report deeming Greene as “low risk” to re-offend but said trust had been placed in Greene by the State of West Virginia and the Division of Corrections, to treat people under his supervision with respect. Nibert said inmates are essentially “helpless” when interacting with supervisors who are in authoritative positions, such as the position Greene was in at the time of the crime.

Greene was immediately remanded into custody upon the imposition of his sentence.

As for the victim, last year, a Charleston newspaper reported she sued the state’s insurance carrier and settled for $250,000.
