GALLIPOLIS —The Gallia County Junior Fair officially opened yesterday and continues throughout the week with a schedule packed full of events.


Daily admission to the fair is $8 per person and includes entertainment, shows and amusement rides. Tickets are available at entrance gates to the fairgrounds, and children under 2 years of age are admitted free but must purchase a ride pass to be admitted on amusement rides.


Season passes are also available for purchase. They are $24 and will admit one person to the fairgrounds and shows for each day of the fair, but they do not include admission to amusement rides.


Tuesday features “Religious and Senior Citizens Night.” For free admission to the fair, senior citizens must show their Golden Buckeye Card.


In the evening on Tuesday, Boy Scout and Girl Scout awards will take place in the Gray Pavilion, and Barnyard Games and the Horse Award Ceremony will take place in the Horse Arena. The four-wheel drive truck and semi-pulls will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Pulling Track. Entertainment for the night will feature The Gospel Harmony Boys and Building 429 on the Holzer Main Stage.


ATV drag racing will take place Wednesday, with practice at 5:30 p.m. and races starting at 7:30 p.m. The Beef Breeding Show, Pet Rabbit Judging and the Extreme 4-H Cowboy Trail Competition are the morning events, with Sheep Showmanship scheduled in the afternoon and the Horse Costume Contest scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. in the Horse Arena. The day will wrap up with Hotel California: The Original Eagles Tribute on the main stage.


The Show Arena will be packed full of events all day Thursday, featuring the Steer Show, Steer and Feeder Calf Showmanship Contest, Feeder Calf and Dairy Feeders, Dairy Show and Master Exhibitor.


Thursday will also feature various events at 12:30 p.m. on the main stage, including the Kiwanis Youth Program, Balloon Bursting, Bubbble Gum Blowing, Watermelon Eating and many other events. The evening will feature a Horse Fun Show at 6 p.m., the Field Stock Tractor Pull at 6:30 p.m. and musical entertainment at 8:30 p.m. with Neal McCoy.


The 54th Annual Market Hog Sale and Freestyle (horse) Riding will kick off the day on Friday at 9 a.m. The Pretty Baby Contest, sponsored by the Gallipolis Jr. Women’s Club, will also take place in the morning at 10 a.m.


Friday afternoon will feature the Horse Skill-A-Thon, Cloverbud Graduation, Holzer Clinic Small Animal Awards and Holzer Clinic Activity Building Awards. The Kiddie Tractor Pull will take place at 6 p.m., and is sponsored by the Gallipolis FFA Alumni. The evening will also feature the OSTPA Sanctioned Tractor Pull and musical entertainment by Riverside Cloggers and The Singing Shafers.


On the fair’s final day, the show arena will house the 56th annual Market Lamb Sale, 63rd annual Market Steer Sale, Second Market Goat Sale and the 32rd annual Tobacco Sale in the morning. The morning will also feature the Gallia County Farm Bureau Talent Show at 10 a.m. on the main stage.


On Saturday evening, the Demolition Derby will start at 5 p.m. and feature law mowers, mini car semi stock, stock full size and stock full size modified. Rick K and the Allnighters will preform at 8:30 p.m., finalizing this year’s fair.
