BIDWELL — The Gallia County Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed their new member, Merry Family Winery. Merry Family Winery was also drawn as March’s Spotlight Business of the Month.
Owners Tim and Lisa Merry planted their first vines in 2000/2001. In 2006, Merry Family Winery opened for business, specializing in handcrafted wines processed at the winery.
The Merrys chose their location, 2376 Ohio 850, Bidwell (formerly the Jewel Evans Gristmill) because of its proximity to U.S. 35.
“The bulk of our customer base is tourists,” Lisa Merry said.
In 2012, the Merry Family Winery was also licensed as a craft brewery and now offers craft beers, also processed on site.
“We grow our own hops. Some of our hops are from hop rhizomes that were brought over from Slovakia by Tim’s great-great-great grandparents when they immigrated to America,” Lisa said.
It was that family connection that first gave the Merrys the inspiration to open a winery. According to Lisa, making beer, wines and brandies has been a Merry family hobby for generations.
