GALLIPOLIS — University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College officials report that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is checking into an alleged sexual assault that occurred June 1 in a residence hall on campus.

“It is a serious allegation,” said James Bessette, URG vice president of enrollment management and marketing. “We are taking it as such. In a notice (sent to URG list serves) sent June 1, that is public information and what everyone has received. The safety of the student body and of our entire campus community is a priority. That’s number one. We’re cooperating with authorities. We’re dealing with them. As it is an open ongoing investigation, we’re really not prepared to make any statements about it.”

Bessette said campus police could potentially handle the case, but felt it was best to involve BCI.
