OHIO VALLEY — Ten South Central Ohio police departments were honored early December with AAA’s Platinum Community Traffic Safety Award for their safety efforts, according to officials at AAA East Central.

Additional departments numbered at 32 received gold, silver or bronze awards in recognition of their hard work.

AAA’s platinum awards are given to “commendable leaders” for their outstanding efforts and enforcement activities geared towards making communities safer over a consecutive three year period. The recipients of the awards were: Gallia, Jackson, Morgan and Washington county sheriffs’ offices, New Matamoras, Portsmouth and Waverly police departments; and Ohio State Highway Patrol posts in Chillicothe, Gallipolis and Portsmouth.

Gold awards, the second-highest recognition to be given, were awarded to: Belpre, Chillicothe, Jackson and Marietta, Peebles, Wellston and West Union police departments; and Ohio State Highway Patrol posts in Athens, Circleville, Ironton, Jackson, Marietta and Steubenville.

Silver awards were presented to: Fayette, Lawrence, Pike and Ross County sheriffs’ offices, and Greenfield, Marietta College, Piketon, Seaman and Washington Court House police departments.

Bronze awards were earned by: Adams County Sheriff’s Department; and Beverly, Coolville, New Boston, Manchester, McArthur, Oak Hill, Pomeroy and South Point police departments.

These agencies were among hundreds nationwide that participated in the Community Traffic Safety Program.

“We are proud of all these departments for their achievement and participation in the Community Traffic Safety Program,” said J.J. Miller, AAA East Central Safety advisor. “They went above and beyond the call of duty by organizing projects to make their communities safer places for motorists and residents.”

To be eligible for the annual awards, a community must conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics.

AAA East Central conducts a variety of free highway safety programs across South Central Ohio focusing on all age groups.
