Gallia honors veterans today

The Gallia County Vietnam Veterans of America conducted a special flag and pole dedication ceremony Saturday afternoon at Bob Evans Farms Homestead in Rio Grande. The ceremony was meant to honor veterans and active-duty military. The event will included remarks from local veterans and representatives from veteran organizations, as well as Bob Evans Farms staff who have served in the military. Bob Evans restaurant also honored veterans and active duty military with a choice of select free breakfast items all day Saturday.

GALLIPOLIS — Every year, Gallipolis goes all out to honor its military veterans, and this year is no different.

The annual Veterans Day parade and ceremony, organized by the Gallia County Veterans Service Commission, takes place today in Gallipolis City Park. All veterans, veteran service groups and community organizations are encouraged to march in the parade that begins at 10:30 a.m. and a ceremony at 11 a.m. in Gallipolis City Park.

The parade will proceed along Second Avenue and end at the Doughboy Memorial on the First Avenue side of Gallipolis City Park, where the annual Veterans Day ceremony will then take place.

Dan Faulkner, who holds the office of state surgeon for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Ohio, will be the guest speaker.

Faulkner joined the VFW in 1991 after returning from Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and became a life member in 1996.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1977 to 2003, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. During his career he served a variety of assignments that include combat aircrew in the E-3A AWACS, and EF-111A, base operations, acquisition, logistics, intelligence and command and staff.

Upon retirement from active duty, Faulkner continued his government service beginning as a division chief in Air Force Material Command.

Faulkner has been married to his wife, Carol, for 35 years and they have two children and two grandchildren.
