GALLIPOLIS —Gallia County knows how to honor its military veterans, past and present.

The annual Veterans Day parade and ceremony in Gallipolis City Park will take place Nov. 11. It is organized by the Gallia County Veterans Service Commission.

All veterans, veteran service groups and community organizations are encouraged to participate.

The Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony, according to John Thomas, service officer and executive director of the Gallia County Veterans Service Office, is to honor military veterans and demonstrate community support for their service and sacrifice.

The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. and will proceed along 2nd Avenue and end at Gallipolis City Park, with the ceremony beginning at 11 a.m.

There Dan Faulkner, who holds the office of state surgeon for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Ohio, will be the guest speaker.

Faulkner joined the VFW in 1991 after returning from Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and became a life member in 1996.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1977 to 2003, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. During his career he served a variety of assignments that include combat aircrew in the E-3A AWACS, and EF-111A, base operations, acquisition, logistics, intelligence and command and staff.

Upon retirement from active duty, Faulkner continued his government service beginning as a division chief in Air Force Material Command.

Faulkner has been married to his wife, Carol, for 35 years and they have two children and two grandchildren.

For folks who wish to participate in the Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11, call the Gallia County Veterans Service Office at 740-446-2005 no later than Nov. 6 to confirm a spot in line.

Tribute to veterans

VFW Post 4464 will have its fifth annual Tribute to Veterans at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Wal-Mart store on Eastern Avenue.

The post will have a parade that will start at the baseball fields on Smithers Avenue (the street across from the main entrance to the store) and will make its way to the Lawn and Garden area of the store. There, a Veterans Day program will commence featuring state Rep. Ryan Smith as the keynote speaker.

People can line up along the parking lot at Wal-Mart to view the parade, which will include Don Mink, a World War II veteran, VFW state commander Christopher Haynes, VFW Honor Guard and the Gallia Academy High School Marching Band. The public is invited to attend and pay tribute and honor veterans.

A wall of honor will be posted inside Wal-Mart that people can use to post pictures of loved ones along with a message. Food and refreshments will follow the ceremony. There will also be a representative from the VA Hospital to answer questions people may have.

For more information on this event, call VFW Post 4446 at 740-446-4464.
