A 1997 Geo Prizm is hauled away after it was involved in a fatal accident late Friday afternoon.


GALLIPOLIS — The Ohio Highway State Patrol is still investigating a head-on collision that occurred at 4:50 p.m. Friday that resulted in one fatality.

The vehicles collided on State Route 7 near mile post 35 in Gallia County, a few miles north of Cheshire. A 1997 maroon Geo Prizm allegedly drove left of center when traveling northbound on State Route 7 and collided with a southbound 2006 Hummer H3.

Justin Collins, 28, of Rutland, and Chelsea Patterson, 22, of Pomeroy, were both taken to the Holzer Emergency Room in Pomeroy having suffered non-life-threatening injuries, after riding in the Hummer.

The Prizm’s passengers were evacuated by chopper to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntingon, W.Va. Helen Bodimer, 93, of Middleport, suffered incapacitating injuries. The Prizm’s driver, Elinor Burke, 65, of Middleport, died due to injury.

All people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts, according to OSHP reports.
