OHIO VALLEY — The Labor Day weekend was a tragic one on the area’s roadways with two people losing their lives in separate accidents, one occurring in Mason County and one in Meigs County.
On Sunday, Sarah Ebert, 18, of Letart, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier along Country Club Road outside Point Pleasant when it appears she lost control of the vehicle and went off the right side of the roadway, according to Sgt. Joe Finnicum with the West Virginia State Police.
Finnicum said after going off the right side of the road, the vehicle then struck an embankment and the car overturned multiple times, ejecting Ebert, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Finnicum said Ebert was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and speed appears as if it could’ve been a factor in the crash. No other vehicles were involved. The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. Sunday. In addition to the W.Va. State Police, which is investigating the accident, also on scene were personnel with the Point Pleasant Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Department and Mason County EMS.
As news of the accident began to make its way around the community, tributes to Ebert were being posted on social media with friends posting condolences and fond memories of the 2015 graduate of Point Pleasant High School. Ebert’s obituary appears inside today’s Point Pleasant Register.
A Meigs County man was also killed on Sunday after a one-vehicle crash. According to reports from the Gallipolis post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Sunday morning at approximately 10:25 a.m. Wayne J. Pauley, 61, of Pomeroy, was traveling northbound on State Route 143 in a 1992 Ford Ranger. After driving off the right side of the roadway, he over corrected and drove off the left side of the roadway, striking a tree. He was wearing a seat belt.
The roadway was closed to one lane for approximately two hours after the crash, which remains under investigation.
This is the second fatal crash in less than a month on SR 143. On Aug. 15, Maynard D. Fitzgerald, 57, of Pomeroy, died after he was traveling southbound on State Route 143 near mile post 17 in a 2007 Nissan Murano and began traveling off the left side of the road. He over-corrected to the right side of the road, but continued off the right side of the roadway. His vehicle struck an embankment and overturned.
According to the report, Fitzgerald was not wearing a seat belt, and officials say alcohol was involved.
