GALLIPOLIS — Three scholarships representing memorial nursing scholarship funds were recently awarded to members of the Holzer nursing staff to assist them in advancing their education.

Audrey McWilliams, of Holzer Jackson Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Misty Althouse, of Athens Pediatrics, were the recipients of the Mary Scully Thomas and Dr. Homer B. Thomas Memorial Nursing Scholarships.

Nicole Baker, of Holzer Lifeline, received the Karen Hudson Memorial Scholarship.

McWilliams joined Holzer in November 2011 in the Urgent Care department at Holzer Jackson Clinic and later transferred to Plastic Surgery and is now in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. She recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ohio University. She lives in Wellston with her husband, Alex, and son, Braxton.

Misty Althouse joined Holzer in May 2015 in Athens Pediatrics. She is currently attending Hocking College in the Registered Nursing program. Althouse resides in Shade and has four children.

The Thomas Scholarship was established in 1974 in memory of Mary Scully Thomas by her husband, Dr. Homer B. Thomas. At the time of his death in 1988, Dr. Thomas’ name was added. Their sons, Dr. James Thomas, of Oxford, and Dr. John Thomas, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, continue to support the scholarship fund.

Baker joined Holzer in February 2015 as a senior services assistant for Holzer Lifeline and is now the Lifeline coordinator. She is currently enrolled in Buckeye Hills Career Center’s Licensed Practical Nursing program. Baker resides in Gallipolis.

The Karen Hudson Memorial Scholarship was established in June 2008 in memory of Karen Hudson by the staff of Holzer Senior Care and Karen’s husband, Les. Hudson was a long-term employee of Holzer Senior Care Center as the quality assurance nurse. Holzer Health Systems staff, the Hudson family, and former Holzer School of Nursing classmates of Hudson’s continue to support this fund.

Interest from the corpus of these funds makes each scholarship possible. The Thomas Scholarship Fund is handled by Holzer Hospital Foundation, while the Hudson scholarship is managed by the Holzer Heritage Foundation.

Scholarships can be set up by an individual, family or civic group. For more information, call 740-446-5217 or e-mail [email protected]
