GALLIPOLIS — The Military Museum located at the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society is truly one of the county’s hidden treasures. And if you haven’t stopped by to explore it at least for a little while, shame on you for six weeks.

According to Mary Lee Marchi, director of the historical and genealogical society, the museum was established about a year ago to honor the memory of Gallia Countians who have served in all branches of the U.S. military.

Marchi said local residents Joe and Alice Giles spearheaded the project and are largely responsible for maintaining the exhibits, which include a display about Maj. Gen. George Bush, uniforms ranging from the Civil War to World War II and other 20th century conflicts, medals and patches, soldier’s helmets and historical videos.

The Military Museum is located on the second floor of the Gallia County Historical and Genealogical Society, located at 412 Second Ave. in Gallipolis. A second museum chock full of civilian memorabilia from Gallia County’s past is also located on the second floor of the society.

The museums are open during the society’s regular operating hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m-1 p.m. Saturday. For information, call (740) 446-7200.
