POINT PLEASANT — It was a proud moment for two graduating seniors at Point Pleasant High School on Friday afternoon.

In front of their fellow teammates, parents, and Coach Dave Darst, Clay Krebs and Nathan Roberts signed National Letters of Intent to play college football.

Both Krebs and Roberts were three-year Varsity Letterman and had won numerous awards during their football career as Black Knights. And this fall, both have hopes of starting on their college football teams.

Krebs, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman, signed his letter of intent with Fairmont State University, the third largest university in the state.

“I really like Fairmont,” Krebs said. “They have a big study body and the coaches care about my football and academic goals.”

The 18-year old also is excited about the new recreational center on the campus where he will spend much of his time working out and conditioning during football season.

Krebs will be majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy and Exercise Science. He plans to continue his education to become a physical therapist and perhaps be a doctor for a football team.

This future ‘Fighting Falcons’ football player reflects on his years at PPHS as being memorable.

“Coach Darst taught me how to learn from a coach and take everything in,” Krebs said. “He also taught me that when the coaches get mad at you, that means they care about you.”

Krebs said his parents have also encouraged him, but mostly just to attend college, no matter whether he pursued football or not.

Other colleges such as Concord University recruited Krebs, but he feels that Fairmont State is better for him. Coach Darst agrees.

“Fairmont is a great choice for Clay,” Darst said. “They really wanted him.”

Darst continued to say that although Krebs will be missed, he knows that he will step in and be an impact player for the team.

“He is leaving as one of the best offensive lineman at PPHS,” Darst said. “He also was a two-time First Team All-State member, something that has never happened before.”

Other awards that Krebs received during his years as a member of the PPHS football team include team Captain, two-time All-Cardinal Conference, two time Jim White Golden Shoe Award for Outstanding Lineman, and OVP Super 25. He played both offensive and defensive lineman.

Krebs is the son of Troy and Lisa Krebs of Point Pleasant. He will be attending Fairmont State University on a football scholarship.

Another PPHS senior will also be attending another college in West Virginia to play for their football team.

Nathan Roberts will trade in his Black Knight helmet for a Mountain Lion one starting in August.

The future Concord University football player is looking forward the environment that the Athens campus has to offer.

“I really like the atmosphere and school, as well as the programs,” Roberts said.

He plans to major in Physical Education with high hopes of become a gym teacher and possible football coach.

Although he said he will miss being away from his family and friends, Roberts is looking forward to playing college football.

“I have played ever since I was five years old,” Roberts said.

At PPHS, Roberts was Captain his senior year, was a three-year Varsity Letterman, Second Team All-State Captain, two-time All-Cardinal Conference, 2010 Kennedy Award Nominee, 2010 Safford Award: Most Valuable Player of the Year, 2009 and 2010 Iron-Man Award, and had 2500 all purpose yards in 2010.

“Concord loved Roberts when they seen his tapes from games,” Darst said.

Coach Darst said that he is thrilled that he has seen the young man going from not being sure whether or not he wanted to play college ball to seeing him sign with the university.

“Nathan had an outstanding year with 1,800 rushing yards,” Darst said. “He also will be missed.”

Other schools who had their eye on the running back and linebacker were West Virginia Tech, Glenville State College, Bethany College, and Fairmont State University. But after one visit, he knew he wanted to attend Concord University.

“All my coaches have helped me get this far,” Roberts said. “I am looking forward to the first week in August when practice starts.”

Roberts is 6-1 and 195 pounds. He is the 18 year old son of Tim and Debbie Roberts of Gallipolis Ferry.
