POINT PLEASANT — A 15-8 third quarter run — combined with some poor free throw shooting by the hosts — ultimately allowed visiting Sissonville to sneak away from Mason County on Thursday night with a 45-36 girls basketball victory over Point Pleasant during a Cardinal Conference matchup.
The Lady Knights (5-11) fell behind 14-11 after eight minutes of play against the Class AA 8th ranked Lady Indians (12-6), but countered with a 9-2 surge over the opening five minutes of the second quarter to take a 20-16 lead with three minutes remaining in the half.
SHS, however, closed the period on an 8-0 surge, turning that four-point deficit into a 24-20 cushion headed into the intermission. The guests then made their biggest charge of the night, going on that pivotal 15-8 run to take a 39-28 edge into the finale.
Point Pleasant managed to cut that deficit down to five points (41-36) with under a minute left in regulation, but never came closer as Sissonville closed the contest with four consecutive points for the nine-point decision.
Sissonville also claimed a season sweep with a 51-37 victory at SHS back on January 14.
The Lady Knights — who went just 5-of-16 at the free throw line for 31 percent — were led by Andrea Porter with 15 points, followed by Ashley Templeton with seven and Kohl Slone with four markers.
Cassandra Cook was next with three points, while the trio of Katie Bruner, Ashley Burns and Amanda Roush each added two points. Skylar Dawkins rounded out the scoring with one point.
Jenna Curry paced the Indians with a game-high 18 points, followed by Hannah Keller with 11 and Logan Henry with seven markers. The guests were 18-of-26 at the free throw line for 69 percent.
There was no junior varsity contest.
Point Pleasant returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Herbert Hoover in a Cardinal Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
