Lady Tomcats sweep Southern, 63-42

GLOUSTER — The Southern girls basketball team dropped its seventh straight decision and remained winless in league play on Thursday night during a 63-42 setback to visiting Trimble in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division matchup in Athens County.

The Lady Tornadoes (3-15, 0-8 TVC Hocking) never led in the contest, falling behind 26-10 after eight minutes of play.

The Lady Tomcats (9-8, 5-3) never looked back from that point, going on an 18-10 surge in the second canto to take a 44-20 cushion into the intermission.

THS kept its good fortunes going into the second half after posting a 14-8 run in the third canto for a 58-28 edge headed into the finale. The hosts closed the game on a 14-5 charge, but never came closer than four possessions the rest of the way.

Southern connected on 17-of-51 field goal attempts for 33 percent, but did not try a three-pointer in the setback. SHS also had team totals of 26 rebounds, 12 steals, six assists and also committed 29 turnovers.

Lindsay Teaford led the Purple and Gold with a game-high 17 points, followed by Cheyene Dunn with 10 and Lynzee Tucker with four markers. Emily Ash, Morgan McMillan, Maggie Cummins, Kyrie Swann and Angie Eynon all added two points apiece.

Kelly Humphrey rounded out the hosts’ scoring with one point. SHS was 8-of-14 at the free throw line for 57 percent. Dunn also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Jessie Spears paced Trimble with 14 points, followed by Kendra Sharrer with 13 and Taylor Savage with 12 markers. The hosts were also 6-of-11 at the stripe for 55 percent.

Southern returns to action Monday when it travels to Stewart for a TVC Hocking matchup with Federal Hocking at 6 p.m.
