ROCKSPRINGS — So much for home-court advantage.

After suffering a heartbreaking 40-37 setback on Wednesday at McAfee Gymnasium in The Plains, the Meigs girls basketball team simply had no answer for visiting Athens 24 hours later during a 49-24 Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division decision at Larry R. Morrison Gymnasium in Meigs County.

The Lady Marauders (8-9, 5-5 TVC Ohio) were limited to just 29 percent shooting from the field and managed double-digit scoring in only one quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs (8-11, 8-3) stymied the hosts with a defense that allowed just five collective points in the second and fourth periods.

Athens established an 11-8 lead after eight minutes of play, then went on a 9-3 surge in the second canto for a 20-11 advantage entering the intermission.

The guests continued that early momentum into the second half, going on a 15-11 run in the third to take a comfortable 35-22 cushion into the finale. The Green and Gold — behind five field goals and 4-of-6 free throw shooting — closed the game on a 14-2 charge to wrap up the 25-point decision.

The setback was the fourth straight for Meigs overall, as well as the fifth league loss in its last six TVC Ohio contests after starting 4-0.

Meigs connected on 9-of-31 field goal attempts and was also 0-for-3 from three-point territory. Meigs also committed 25 turnovers and had 25 rebounds in the decision.

Morgan Howard led the Maroon and Gold with 10 points and seven rebounds, followed by Micki Barnes with four markers and Miranda Grueser with three points. Chandra Stanley, Alaine Arnold and Jazzman Fish all added two points apiece.

Shanalle Smith rounded out the scoring with one point. MHS was 6-of-12 at the free throw line for 50 percent.

Elena Lein led the Green and Gold with a game-high 14 points, followed by Raven Cline with 10 markers. The AHS duo of Cindy Willis and Gracie Staten contributed six points apiece. Athens was 12-of-19 at the stripe for 63 percent.

Athens claimed an evening sweep with a 25-24 victory in the junior varsity contest. Delilah Fish led the JV Marauders with six points, while Cat Carpanelli led the JV Bulldogs with a game-high 10 points.

Meigs returns to action Saturday when it hosts River Valley in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m.
