A response by police to a stolen firearm complaint ended in drug charges against a Portsmouth man. Richard A. Johnson, 21, of 1515 Summit Street, Apt. 4, is charged with possession of drugs - heroin.
According to Portsmouth police, detectives Jim Charles and Andy Dawes responded to a stolen firearm report. As the result of a conversation officers went to the Summit Street address and talked with Johnson who denied any involvement in the stolen gun report. When Dawes entered the room, he said he immediately saw a plate with white residue on it on Johnson’s bed. Police said Johnson told them he used the plate to cut a pain pill. Detectives also observed several torn baggies on the floor and asked if there were anymore drugs in the bedroom.
Johnson reportedly told them there were no more drugs and gave them permission to search the apartment. Detectives said Johnson acted peculiar around a closet, so they told him to move aside, and they began to search the closet. There they said they found a pack of cigarettes partially hidden on the top shelf. Upon further observance, officers said the found a baggy with an off-white powder, which they said turned out to be heroin.
