GALLIPOLIS - A one-car accident early Thursday on Bulaville Pike has taken the life of a Gallipolis man, the Gallia-Meigs Post of the State Highway Patrol reported.
Jonathan B. Pennington, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which the patrol said occurred around 5 a.m., about a mile north of Ohio 160 and around 1,000 feet past the U.S. 35 overpass.
Troopers said Pennington waws southbound when the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu he operated went off the left side of the road and struck several pilings before striking a tree and coming to a stop.
The car then caught fire. The Gallipolis Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched almost immediately to the scene with two trucks and 11 firefighters, who were there for almost 4-1/2 hours.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal's office was also contacted and on the scene, and the patrol was also assisted by the Gallia County Sheriff's Department. The car, which sustained heavy damage, was towed.
The accident remains under investigation, said Lt. Richard Grau, the G-M Post commander. It marks the third traffic fatality in Gallia County this year.
The victim has been released to the Willis Funeral Home for arrangements.
